Prevention



Prevention of Piracy:

  • Frequent patrols by international naval vessels
  • Shipping companies have set armed security on their ships to help prevent attacks and potential rises in piracy
  • They also put security on the ships so they don't have to waste fuel trying to avoid the piracy hot spots
  • Many confrontations between pirates and private security vessels have occurred
  • 544 attacks worldwide in 2011
  • The number of kidnappings and hijackings have decreased
  • Between 1 January and 7 June 2012, there were 157 reported pirate attacks worldwide, with a total of 18 successful hijackings
  • 12 of the hijackings have involved Somali pirates and involved an estimated 188 hostages
  • 8 out of 9 pirate attacks are thwarted
